Words From The Designer

"Some golf courses take longer to materialize than others. Sometimes these delays turn out for the best. I first visited the site nearly 20 years ago and was immediately impressed with the inherent potential of this land to become one of Europeâï¿½ï¿½s great golf courses.

"Apart from the wonderful views out to sea from so many holes, the striking feature of the site is the deep canyon that separates two plateaus. The problem was how to incorporate this gorge into the course design, and how to cross it! A clever network of cart paths solved it, and in addition, the descent down to the 7th tee is an adventure in itself.

"We were fortunate in that the site was fairly well covered with carob and olive trees, and fine native grass out in the rough, that turns golden in late summer, completes a simple but elegant landscape palette which I found extremely pleasing to the eye. With a little additional planting, the holes were âï¿½ï¿½Mediterranean matureâï¿½ï¿½ on completion.

"I have kept the fairways spaciously wide between the trees, the greens on the large size, and both men and women have two sets of tees to choose from to match your capabilities. Challenge it from the very tips however, and in a bit of a breeze, and that can be a whole different story.

"People often ask me what my favorite hole is. Just as often I try to dodge the issue diplomatically. Favorite golf holes are subjective choices just as the beauty of one woman attracts a man more than that of another. But I will offer some suggestions.

"If you can carry 200 meters with your driver, you should try the back tee on the 3rd. It looks forever over the gorge, but it is only that far to reach safety. It is a thrill of a lifetime shot if you succeed. The 7th deep within the bowels of the canyon is another dramatic shot, while fantastic sea views are to be had at the 8th and 15th. Personally I think reaching for the back pin position on the 12th needs the most courage, while the 16th is my pick for the toughest par-4, and the 18th is a reachable and wonderful par-5.

"Aphrodite Hills is the culmination of my 35 years designing courses, and I rate it among my very best work. But you the golfer, will be the final judge. Above all, take in the views, the landscape and the tranquility. Too often we forget that golf is but a game âï¿½ï¿½and one to be enjoyed."

Hole Details

A tricky opening to the round. An 18th century kiln lies in the center of the fairway, so the best line for the drive is just down the right side. This is a large green, so make sure you have enough club on your approach to finish pin-high or you could have a tough opening putt.

Use a long iron or fairway wood for position. There are no fairway bunkers but still favor the right side, as this leaves an easier approach, usually with a mid-iron, into a green that slopes left to right and back to front.

A tough, uphill par-4 for most, but a cracker of a par-5 from the back tee over the canyon. From the drive the ball tends to feed in to the center. Long hitters can reach the green in two, but if you can’t, lay up just past the cross bunker to leave an open pitch into this long green.

The perfect drive at this long but slightly downhill par-4 is at the bunker on the right edge of the fairway with a touch of draw. Be careful not to hit to far left, as the tree obscure your line into the green. The approach looks shorter than it actually is, so trust the distance.

Aim to get the ball pin-high. If the flag is on the back horseshoe of the green it’s better to take one club more. When the pin is in the bowl at the front the ball will feed in from both sides, but beware, anything hit to the back of the green when the flag is forward leaves a treacherous putt or three.

A birdie chance. Long hitters can let rip over the fairway bunker down the right, giving the possibility of reaching in two. For others it is safer to hit a fairway wood into the very tight landing between the bunkers. The landing area for the second shot is very wide; but the best line in with your third is from the left side.

A spectacular par-3. Be very aware of the wind direction through the ravine, both the green and tee can be protected and fool you with club selection. Aim at the left half of the green; this leaves a bigger margin of error for a wayward tee shot. The green is big but watch out for the subtle breaks even on those short putts.

Play with caution, as there’s out of bounds right and a lateral hazard left. This hole also has an ancient olive press in the center of the fairway, not visible from the back tees. Hit a long iron or fairway wood down towards the fairway bunker on the right as that side is more elevated and gives a better view of the very long green.

The best line is down the left towards the fairway bunkers. There is a lot more room down that side than there first appears. This opens up the approach into a green that slopes towards you. Try and keep the ball below the hole on this receptive green or be faced with a treacherous downhill putt.

For most it is out of reach in two shots. There is ample room off the tees; bit more emphasis must be placed on the second shot as the fairway narrows the closer you get to the green. Push for those extra few meters and the water left and bunker right come well into play.

Aim over the right of the three cross-bunkers for safety, the tiger line is over the left bunker that requires a big carry. The approach is uphill into a long green; take one more club that the yardage suggests especially when the pin is in the back half of the green.

The prevailing wind is nearly always helping. Select a club to pitch short of the hole, from the slightly elevated tees as the ball usually releases forward on this very long and well-bunkered green. Don’t go big as there is a sharp drop-off behind and right of the green.

Avoid the ravine on the right and aim towards the bottom of the hills on the left. The ball will feed down to the center of the fairway and leave a short to mid-iron approach. The green slopes left to right, and keep the ball below the hole for an easier uphill putt.

Avoid taking too much off the dogleg, as there is a lot of hidden trouble on the right side. Hit a long iron or fairway wood towards the right edge of the bunkers. For the approach all trouble is short of the green. Hit one or two clubs more into the prevailing wind; from the back of the green it is possible to save par.

Playing into the prevailing wind from these elevated tees requires more club than you first think. Aim toward the right half of the green to be safe, anything too left can lead to a big trouble and a high score. At least from the right you can save par, but a 4 is still a good score on this long par-3

Possibly the most demanding par-4. The drive must be kept down the left half of the fairway. Once past the bunker on the left the green opens up for the approach. The long second shot will often roll down toward the front of the green. The green itself is fairly flat; reaching it is the difficulty!

This medium length par-3 has a large front portion of green that will not pose any difficulty. When the pin is in the back right portion a high fade is required to hold the ball on the green. Opt for the heart of the green and face an awkward breaking putt over a small rise.

Hit your tee shot toward the right side of the mounded fairway bunker. A big drive will run past the bunker and an extra roll down the hill could leave the temptation to go for it. Otherwise there is plenty of room to lay up into the sculptured areas left of the water. The further towards the green, the more water you will take out of play for your approach leading to a possible closing birdie.

Course Polices

BAD WEATHER POLICY
These are the conditions for the various situations that arise due to inclement weather:

1.     THE COURSE WILL BE CLOSED FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS:

a.Flooded greens
b.Thunder and lightening
c.If the conditions are bad enough in any way as to be considered dangerous to the players or damaging to the golf course – i.e. fog, frost, flooding.
In bad weather, a decision will be made as early as possible each morning and hourly, thereafter. All InterContinental Hotel guests and other hotel guests should contact the Pro Shop to be informed of the condition of the golf course

1.1.In the above situations, the following conditions will apply:
a.A NO-SHOW green fee will not be charged.

2.     THE COURSE IS CLOSED AFTER THE CLIENT HAS STARTED HIS/HER ROUND:
2.1    In the above situations, the following conditions will apply:
a.If the client has played no more than 5 holes/full cash or voucher refund will be given, depending on the method of green fee payment.
b.If the client has played more than 5 holes and not more than 12 holes, a 9 hole cash or voucher refund will be given depending on the method of green fee payment.

NB: If either of the above procedures are used, the necessary adjustment to the clients voucher must be made and the appropriate Tour Operator will be notified. A member of Aphrodite Golf staff and the client must sign the adjusted voucher.

If clients request an alternative starting time, a credit 9/18 hole voucher may be issued by Aphrodite Golf Pro shop if there are suitable starting times available within the next 48 hours.

RULES & DRESS CODE AT APHRODITE HILLS GOLF

Starting times – are at 8-minute intervals. Flights are made up as 4 balls; therefore players booking 2 or 3 balls must expect to be paired up with another group when needed. Please follow the starter’s and marshal’s instructions.
Buggies – Aphrodite Hills Golf is a buggy only golf course. Buggies must be kept on the pathways at all times. Drivers must be minimum 18 years of age.
Handicap certificates – Maximum for men: 28, ladies 36. The starter/marshal has the right to direct certain players to play from forward tees if deemed to be holding up play. Players who do not have the stipulated level of play may be asked to leave the course, with no refund given.
Dress code – trousers made of denim material, tracksuits and tennis wear are not allowed. Men’s shorts must be at least of Bermuda length. Men’s socks must be at least of ankle length. Men’s shirts must have collars and long or short sleeves. Ladies t-shirts without collar must have sleeves. Ladies t-shirts with collar may be sleeveless.
Metal spikes- are not allowed anywhere within Clubhouse or golf course. They can be changed to soft spikes at a cost. No exception will be made for shoes with non-removable spikes. Tennis shoes and trainers are not considered golf dress.
Lockers – are available in the changing rooms. A deposit of £1.00 CYP will be payable at the Pro shop, in the event of a lost key the deposit will be non refundable.
Food & Beverages - it is Club Policy that only food and beverage purchased at the Club may be consumed or possessed within the Club premises, including the golf course. The bringing in of food or beverage from outside the Club for consumption within the Club is strictly prohibited. The Clubhouse Restaurant is available for all food & beverage requirements both on and off the golf course.
Course closure – will be deemed closed when the golf course superintendent, 1st assistant to the superintendent, or Director of Golf officially close the course because of inclement weather. Alternative golf arrangements thereafter can be made at the Pro shop.
